2012 CODA EV

Timothy Collins President of KleenSpeed technologies tests the 2012 CODA EV at the LA Auto Show Press Day.

Coda has a marvelous display at the show revealing the secrets of the Coda surrounded by excellent graphics and all the information one needs to buy an Electric Car.The LA Auto Show at the convention center runs through Turkey day and the 27th.

The 3660 pound Coda has a plain vanilla look, but closer examination yields a pleasing quiet 21st Century modern vehicle. The finish work is equivalent to any comparably priced car. Just close your eyes and travel 10 years forward and you will see millions of these cars, the Coda becoming becoming the Camry, Malibu or Fiesta.

Electric buyers are eliminating the nightmare of gasoline at $4, $5 and soon $6 a gallon.
Lets look at the price – $39,900 before $10,000 in rebates in California. Sounds high, but really it is not at all – as it comes with 10 years of gasoline equivalence which means your Chevron bill will be like mine at $0 for ten years with a tiny uptick in your electric bill.

OK, lets drive the Coda. Slide in amongst the six air bags, buckle up, turn the KEY and lights twinkle. The GPS lights up with with Bluetooth; I phone and Alpine system at the ready. Turn the dial from Park to Reverse, press the throttle and it quietly backs up with no exhaust noise or smell. Turn the dial to Drive and it smoothly moves forward with quiet assurance.

Out on the road it accelerates quickly to traffic speed with four wheel independent suspension avoiding any bumps. I punched it at a Red turned Green and the Coda leaped to 55 MPH and then – to my horror I saw the police on my bumper – oh dear. Well, no harm – no foul and no ticket as I guess they were out there policing the children with their new toys – me.

I drove the car within reason the rest of the trip slamming on the brakes and turning in hard to corners at the speed limit. The Coda responded beautifully.

Let’s examine the the Coda’s winning factors. The motor and drive is a UQM permanent magnet motor which KleenSpeed uses in our EV-X11 Worlds Fastest Racecar. That means more torque than the competitors at a lower RPM, which equates to real get up and go. The 36kWh Battery pack will give the driver 150 MILES of travel – more than twice the Leaf or I-Miev. The 10 year battery guarantee will give the owner the smug superior feeling as he or she passes service stations or travels down the commuter lane during rush hour in California. Time is money and gas is a lot of money and pollution. The Coda solves all the problems that the gasoline cars cause.

Timothy Collins President KleenSpeed Technologies Inc., I test drove Fisker at a conference in Rohnert Park courtesy of Tom Price and Price Family Dealerships. I came away thinking that the Fisker is the “Bentley ” of the Hybrid Group at less than half the price of a Bentley.

Unlike the Volt, the Fisker is a true series hybrid with the motor turning a generator and the generator driving the electric motors. It is substantial at 7 feet wide 16 feet long and 5300 pounds and it feels solid on the road. It gurgles nicely when he turn on button is pushed and is very quiet even at full throttle when the 262 horsepower motor is running at full RPM.

Stealth Mode works nicely and features 50 miles range battery power from a 20.1 Kwh battery pack. Sport Mode using the paddle shift is the performance and the preferable mode for any aggressive driving. Aggressive is what did and the Fisker responded well stopping quickly and accelerating rapidly. It turns in nicely and over steers as the rear of the car has the most weight. You can hang it out a little which gives you a good feel in the turn. The two rear mounted electric motors ignore the weight of the car and send it out of the corner with that wonderful 100% or 959 ft-lbs of torque available immediately which make the electric car such a dream to drive.

The Fisker is the highest of quality in all regards especially the interior and thus the Bentley comparison is earned. The Fisker is undoubtedly the best hybrid transition to a battery only powered electric vehicle and has achieved the “Brand ” look. When you see a Fisker from any angle you know it is a Fisker. More great cars should be coming from Fisker.

Since KleenSpeed converted the Eiata, we already put 13,100 miles on it in the past 12 months, which means 1,091 miles per month.
In October, our president, Timothy Collins drove it 25 days.
According to KleenSpeed index, 1091*25=27,292. See if you can beat this.

Timothy Collins the President of KleenSpeed Technologies traveled to the SEMA show in Las Vegas last week. There were more than 2000 Exhibitors and all Las vegas Convention Space was maxed out. The Auto Industry is back in good health and getting better. Chevy celebrated their 100th Aniversary and Ford brought their Lemans wining GT 40 and Indy winning Lotus plus many concepts. There was one theme missing and that was the Electric Vehicle. It was all about gasoline cars and products to make and enhance the automobile. SEMA demonstrates to us the the EV Frontier is just that. We hope to take Electric vehicles and components to SEMA next year and open up the flood gates of EV mind share.

If you ever wondered what KleenSpeed was doing or if KleenSpeed could be successful, Revenge of the Electric Car will let you know the answer. It is like watching a validation of our business plan and the “Frontier is mentioned in a 1920′s context.
The brilliant documentary by Chris Paine narrated by Tim Robbins runs 110 minutes of EV validation and follows for 4 years Tesla, Nissan Leaf, Chevy Volt and a garage converter named “Gadget” in SoCal who does a beautiful conversion of a Porsche Speedster and drives it 120 miles to Palm Springs. It is about heroic futuristic men and women who live and breath the EV dream and are willing to stake their careers and or net worth on their EV entries. Musk bet the farm on Tesla’s success and an anti Detroit attitude., Ghosn is tough, unwavering and prescient in bringing the Leaf to market., Lutz surrounded in cigar smoke proves that Detroit can embrace new technology rather than crushing it. Gadget understands that a clean installation and miles will create a market for his conversions.
KleenSpeed fits in between Gadget with our Eiata  (13,125 miles during the last 12 months) and Tesla with our KleenSpeed Kar, our EV-X11  (3 Records in Three years) and E Kart/ Micro Car System.   KleenSpeed was oriented to systems expertise and vehicle integration for our first 3 years and then production car oriented during the last 12 months. Our KleenSpeed Kar entry should hit the streets in the first quarter of 2012 with a 125 mile range and a $25,000 price tag.
Go see this documentary and feel with pride the electricity flowing through KleenSpeed.  TC
